Illuminated Ground

Contemporary Landscapes

May 15 - July 12, 2015

Please join us for Illuminated Ground: Contemporary Landscapes, a group exhibition opening with Gallery Hop on Friday, May 15, from 5 to 8 pm in our newly renovated space on the second floor of the Downtown Arts Center.

We often turn to nature to be restored, filled with inspiration, emptied of worry, and to feel connected once more to the Earth.  It is no surprise then, that while many of the artists represented in this exhibition are not "landscape artists" specifically, they have taken up the subject of landscape from time to time.  Each artist adapts the subject in his/her own style, whether it's to celebrate natural wonders or as inspiration for abstraction. The contemporary landscape also cannot help but reference the inherent tension between enjoyment and exploitation of natural resources.

Nori Hall, Laurel River, archival digital print,

"To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again." - Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature.  It is this intangible instant that compels the artist to bring forth into existence an image that would have been fleeting and to give it permanence.
